Pitch Pine
A nice delicate thin walled bowl made of "Pitch" or resinous pine wood. When a Pine tree dies and rots the center core of heart wood is often so saturated with resin that it does not rot for decades. The resin or pitch smells of turpinetine, for which it is the source, and is flammable when ignited with a flame, even when wet. It has been used as a fire starter for millennial and when fossilized becomes Amber.
The resinous wood is also translucent as can be seen when this bowl is held to a bright light.
There is no finish on this bowl as the pitch itself serves as a finish and can be polished to a shine by itself.
The log this bowl was carved from was nearly 8" in diameter which means the tree would have been a giant to leave a center core that big. I do not know how long ago this tree would have lived and died but it was a very, very long time ago.
Pitch pine is hard to work with as it gums up tools and sandpaper.
This bowl matches #2098.
